Frank Zappa: Pop History Vol. 7

“Pop History” was a series of double albums released by Polydor Germany in the early 1970s. All 30 releases are listed here, and we will write short features about all of them!

We’ll start, of course, with Frank Zappa.

In an attempt to visualize the “anti-establishment” mood of the Mothers’ music the Polydor art department had the glorious idea to rip up the “classical” border that is featured on the front covers; and which was intended as an ironic hint at encyclopedic historical books (in the “pop” spirit of the time, psychedelic colours and all…). The tracklisting is a fascinating journey through Zappa’s Verve albums:

Taken from these albums: Freak Out! (1966: A1, A2, A3, C2, C4, D3), Absolutely Free (1967: A4, B1, C1, C3, D1, D2, D5), We’re Only In It For The Money (1968: A5, B2, C5, C6, D4), Cruising With Ruben & The Jets (1968: B3, B4). Some strange mixes and edits… Listen to the complete album here!
